The Origin of Baju Kebaya
Do you know the origin of Baju Kebaya? Baju Kebaya is believed to originate from Arab countries where Arab traders have brought and introduced this clothing fashion to the archipelago since hundreds of years ago. Baju Kebaya or known as Abaya in Arabic later spread to Malacca, Java, Sumatra, Bali, and Sulawesi. The result of cultural assimilation over the past hundreds of years has caused this dress to be accepted by the local population.
Before the year 1600 on the island of Java, Kebaya clothes could only be worn by women from the upper class or the royal family. When the island of Java was colonized by the Dutch, this dress was later worn by European women as an official dress.
The fashion of the Kebaya dress often changes according to place, originally the Kebaya dress was only made of mori weave using silk, now the Kebaya dress is more attractive with colorful embroidery. This traditional dress is not out of date because until now Kebaya dress is used as an official dress and is widely used in the hotel industry, aviation, and tourism.
