Kurung Kedah History

Many women in Malaysia and neighboring countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, and Brunei love Baju Kurung Kedah. In modern times, Kurung Kedah clothes frequently appear during festivals, ceremonies, and events. This attire represents a traditional heritage passed down by previous generations. Kurung Kedah history highlights its deep cultural significance and enduring appeal, making it a cherished part of the region’s fashion legacy.

The Baju Kurung Kedah originates from Southern Thailand due to Kedah’s proximity to the Thai border. Kurung Kedah history highlights how the Sultanah of Kedah, Wan Hajar Wan Ismail, better known as Mak Wan Besar, first introduced this fashion. Initially, the dress served the noble class and palace elites. However, over time, it transitioned into everyday wear thanks to its short, loose cut, which suits daily use perfectly. Women, especially the elderly, prefer wearing Baju Kurung Kedah for its ease and comfort.

Features of Baju Kurung Kedah

Traditionally, Baju Kurung Kedah uses “cita” cloth or cotton with small floral patterns on transparent, thin gauze. Although it resembles Baju Kurung Johor, this dress does not include “kekek” and “pesak.” Essentially, Baju Kurung Kedah serves as everyday attire, such as for working in the fields. The dress features a short hem cut to the back level, making it ideal to be worn with “batik” or “pelikat” fabric. Additionally, the sleeves are short, measuring three-quarters of the arm, with a wider hand width than other baju kurung. The neck of this baju kurung is round and slightly open in the front without buttons.

Its journey from the exclusive wardrobes of the noble class to becoming a common favorite highlights its adaptability to changing times and fashion trends. The Baju Kurung Kedah not only preserves cultural heritage but also continues to inspire modern fashion with its unique design and functionality. Today, it remains a symbol of elegance and tradition, cherished by women of all ages for its comfort and timeless style.
